Teaching body
The teaching body includes a broad range of professors of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna from various fields such as law, engineering, philosophy, social robotics, management and innovation, providing an extremely interdisciplinary perspective with a unique experience in the field. Most of the professors have actively participated in the RoboLaw project, financed by the European Commission (FP7), which developed the “Guidelines on Regulating Robotics” presented to the European Parliament and Commission in September 2014. Those guidelines triggered political debate and led to the establishment of a Commission of the European Parliament, currently discussing necessary legal reform and political action to ensure the development of a strong, yet responsible, European robotic industry, and manage the many ethical, social and economic issues that robotics brings about.
Dr. Andrea Bertolini
Andrea Bertolini is Assistant Professor in private law at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) in Pisa. Dr. Bertolini earned a Ph.D. in private law summa cum laude at SSSA and a Master in Laws (LL.M.) from Yale Law School (CT-USA). Since 2013 he has been Adjunct Professor in Private Law at the University of Pisa, Department of Economic and Management.
Dr. Bertolini is the Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Module on Europe Regulates Robotics and of the Summer School.
He started researching on Law and Robotics in 2012 with the RoboLaw project, and has since then developed an expertise on issues of liability, insurance and risk management, human enhancement and roboethics, standardization and privacy by design.
Dr. Bertolini presented his results before the European Parliament and Commission on multiple occasions and is a frequent speaker in all major robotic events in Europe and internationally. His research was covered by national and international press, including The Economist, The Times, Wired, BBC Radio, Quattroruote, Corriere della Sera, Sole 24 Ore, QN, La Stampa.
Dr. Bertolini is an attorney admitted to practice in Italy and New York.
Prof. Erica Palmerini
Erica Palmerini is Associate Professor of private law at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA). She was the scientific coordinator of the RoboLaw Project, financed by the European Commission, which elaborated the Guidelines on Regulating Robotics (available for download here www.robolaw.eu) then presented to the European Parliament and Commission.
These guidelines sparked political debate in Europe on the issues of the regulation of robotics, and introduced an innovative methodology and approach in the study of the legal and ethical issues raised by robotic devices.
In 2013, she received the World Technology Award in the category “Law”, for her research on the regulation of robotics.
Her main interests are in the areas of law and technology, bioethics, tort law and medical law.
